Open Waters…

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Friday the 6th was my last official day being employed at MySQL (Sun we’re now extinct Microsystems)… sorry, couldn’t resist.  Although I had to return my nice trusty Macbook Pro, New Belgium Brewery Sticker, Chewbacca in ‘09 sticker, VPN password generator, Sun branded pen, mousepad… ok, so I kept the pen and mousepad ;-)

I wanted to talk about my week a little…  This past week I kept very busy with my new house.  I’ve painted the bathroom an awesome grey/blue color, painted my office & finished the touch up paint in the living room.  Being a home owner is a lot of hard work but I find it to be extremely enjoyable and satisfying.  If you really want a great workout and/or want to get in shape, I recommend buying a small fixer upper house and the following:

  • Tear down a wall or two… Open concept floorplans are great and make small houses seem huge!
  • Rip out that un-even tile floor and lay hardwood throughout…  Now I didn’t intall the hardwoods in the kitchen and the rest of the house already had wood, but I did spend 3 days pulling out tile floor and three layers of sub-floor in the kitchen.
  • Paint EVERYTHING! The previous owner of our house was a bachelor for most of the time he lived here and had the WORST colors in the world in this place.  I would describe it as a orange-cream soda color. Make sure you get some Angled brushes to trim out properly and BUY GOOD PAINT!!  We used a local company here in Denver (Guiry’s Paint Supply) which sells Benjamin Moore paint.  I can’t get this point across enough… GET GOOD PAINT, your life will be much easier. I suggest Diamond Vogul or Sherwin-Williams if you don’t like Benjamin Moore
  • Invest in Caulk!  Caulk is not only a good idea to stop air drafts & water leaking… it’s that finishing touch which makes all of your hard work look Amazing!  I had to re-caulk the main window in the front room & the office and the entire bathroom.  I still can’t believe the previous owner semi-remodeled the bathroom (Sink, Toilet, Faucet, towel bars) and didn’t use a single bead of caulk.  Now after a half tube of clear slicon caulk my bathroom looks amazing!
  • Get new countertops.. or do some form of new-look renovation (bathroom sink, toilet, tile floors, etc…). As I’m writing this post we’re waiting for our new granite countertops to be installed and then spend the day watching the Superbowl (mainly for the commercials, beer & potato skins). Granite is not as expensive as you might think, especially if you ask around and find someone to do the fabrication and install who you can pay in cash or doesn’t work for a larger company.  Always make sure they come recommended and that you are comfortable with that person.  If you get a standard granite, a slab will run about $800-$1000, we needed about 34 square feet and were able to find a ’single-slab’ at a nice discount.  Single slabs are the very last piece of whichever type of granite left in the yard. Most people need more than one slab because they have a lot of counter space or an island, we have neither which is why smaller houses are very nice on the budget.

These are most of the major projects I’ve done over the last months and have lost about 10-15lbs doing most of the work myself.  It’s been extremely enjoyable and frustrating but I wouldn’t have done it any other way.  I’ll leave you with a few final thoughts on this subject… Make sure you know your limitations, I’ve never installed wood floors & my drywall patching skills are bad!  So I hired our those two projects, asked around got some great recommendations and in so received GREAT deals.  Contractors get more jobs based on referrals, if you had a great experience tell your friends & family, most contractors will give you a break.  Finally take the time to enjoy your hard work! Regardless if you did they physical labor yourself or paid a contractor to do it, grab a drink sit back and admire YOUR hard work and effort.  You Deserve It!

3 Months… Seriously?

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Yeah, this has been by far the craziest summer of my life.  There are things which I’m not allowed to discuss (just google who I work for & EU), some product launches, a re-design and lots of other things have occupied my time this suumer.  I plan on writing very soon about some Design related topics, however I need to drop myself a note about VMWare Fusion and get back to work…  Don’t forget to follow my Twitter feed (I’m pretty active on Twitter) @aaronkwhite

Update

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

It always amazes me how busy someone can become and where blogging falls in the list of Priorities.  Obviously it’s pretty low and I’m trying to remedy that as best as possible.  There are a Ton of things going on right now, one of which I’m legally not allowed to discuss in the blogsphere (read my profile, look at my employer and you’ll see what I’m referring to).  I have a big project for MySQL I’m in the middle of, still need to keep it under wraps but I hope you’ll enjoy the outcome as much as I am creating it.  Personally, I’ve been trying to play more golf (doing pretty well at that), am attempting to do P90X, at this point I’m only doing certain workouts 1-2 times per week, I need to ride my bike some more…. can never get too much exercise I think.  Finally the wife and I should have some big news pretty soon, and unfortunately it’s not kids, Yet! ;-)

Regarding Wordpress Theming, I’ve had to place this on the back burner for a bit, until I get some more free-time to focus on creating some themes, however it is still high on my list of things to get done.

For the near future I’m going to try and blog about some of the technical & personal stuff I’ve been doing (Short Blog Post on Ubuntu & VMWare Fusion coming shortly) and make an effort to blog at least 1 a week… I’m sorry to say that Twitter has started to consume some of my blogging cycles, guess I should find a way to incorporate both.  Thanks,

Get a Clue Starbucks!

Monday, February 9th, 2009

You can file this post under Random, but I could not resist sharing my shock.  Today Starbucks announced that they are going to unveil an F’n Value Menu.  Yes the company that brought the no-foam, half-caff, skinny, vente latte out of the drudges of the whole in the wall beatnick coffee houses of the pacific northwest is joining the ranks of Ronald McDonald, the King (who I believe is on a really bad acid trip), and that square burger prostitute Wendy!

I like most people used to (most people still do) spent a small fortune on Vente Mochas, Latte’s, South American drips and the occasional frappuccin0.  Now everyone knows that SB started to go downhill when providing a good cup of coffee or nice latte was not enough…  Everyone needs a good pastry… and bottled water… and sparkling water… and cookies… and cupcakes… and yogurt parfaits… and lunch… and hot sandwiches… the list goes on and on… you get the idea.  I would say starting about 5-6 years ago Starbucks coffee started to become bitter, burnt and over priced.  First is was with the whole beans and then the price increases on EVERYTHING ELSE.  Oh and when you spend $6 on a Grande Mocha that has been watered down… this is where I draw the line.

Starting Monday you can get a coffee & pastry for $5 (I’m estimating taxes).  Hey! Starbucks!  No you are not immune to the economic climate, yes you built too many stores (although you closed some of them) but for the LOVE OF A DECENT COFFEE, DO NOT sell a Happy Meal!  Don’t spend THOUSANDS of dollars on a machine that makes the perfect cup of coffee***  Get back to basics, stay true to your brand.  Start buying/growing good coffee beans, or sell that business to someone else and BUY GOOD COFFEE.  Everyone knows that good beans make a good cup of coffee!

TRAIN YOUR STAFF!  Now I have never worked in a coffee house, honestly I have never made a latte, however I DO know that you DO NOT take a spoon and push foam into the cup!  Go spend some time in a real coffee house, you know… your ROOTS!  I saw on the Food Network once a latte making competition, where they made designs in the foam (apples, leaves) start making real real coffee again.  Lower your prices, quit selling all the CRAP, like Barry Manilow albums and get back to basics! Make a REAL cup of Coffee…

A Decent Latte!

A Decent Latte!

*** Just for the record Starbucks is planning on spending a ton of money on a machine for all their stores that makes the ‘Perfect’ cup of coffee.  Get Real, a machine doesn’t make the perfect cup of coffee alone, you need quality beans!

Update: here is a story about the ‘Clover’ coffee machines
