Open Waters…

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Friday the 6th was my last official day being employed at MySQL (Sun we’re now extinct Microsystems)… sorry, couldn’t resist.  Although I had to return my nice trusty Macbook Pro, New Belgium Brewery Sticker, Chewbacca in ‘09 sticker, VPN password generator, Sun branded pen, mousepad… ok, so I kept the pen and mousepad ;-)

I wanted to talk about my week a little…  This past week I kept very busy with my new house.  I’ve painted the bathroom an awesome grey/blue color, painted my office & finished the touch up paint in the living room.  Being a home owner is a lot of hard work but I find it to be extremely enjoyable and satisfying.  If you really want a great workout and/or want to get in shape, I recommend buying a small fixer upper house and the following:

  • Tear down a wall or two… Open concept floorplans are great and make small houses seem huge!
  • Rip out that un-even tile floor and lay hardwood throughout…  Now I didn’t intall the hardwoods in the kitchen and the rest of the house already had wood, but I did spend 3 days pulling out tile floor and three layers of sub-floor in the kitchen.
  • Paint EVERYTHING! The previous owner of our house was a bachelor for most of the time he lived here and had the WORST colors in the world in this place.  I would describe it as a orange-cream soda color. Make sure you get some Angled brushes to trim out properly and BUY GOOD PAINT!!  We used a local company here in Denver (Guiry’s Paint Supply) which sells Benjamin Moore paint.  I can’t get this point across enough… GET GOOD PAINT, your life will be much easier. I suggest Diamond Vogul or Sherwin-Williams if you don’t like Benjamin Moore
  • Invest in Caulk!  Caulk is not only a good idea to stop air drafts & water leaking… it’s that finishing touch which makes all of your hard work look Amazing!  I had to re-caulk the main window in the front room & the office and the entire bathroom.  I still can’t believe the previous owner semi-remodeled the bathroom (Sink, Toilet, Faucet, towel bars) and didn’t use a single bead of caulk.  Now after a half tube of clear slicon caulk my bathroom looks amazing!
  • Get new countertops.. or do some form of new-look renovation (bathroom sink, toilet, tile floors, etc…). As I’m writing this post we’re waiting for our new granite countertops to be installed and then spend the day watching the Superbowl (mainly for the commercials, beer & potato skins). Granite is not as expensive as you might think, especially if you ask around and find someone to do the fabrication and install who you can pay in cash or doesn’t work for a larger company.  Always make sure they come recommended and that you are comfortable with that person.  If you get a standard granite, a slab will run about $800-$1000, we needed about 34 square feet and were able to find a ’single-slab’ at a nice discount.  Single slabs are the very last piece of whichever type of granite left in the yard. Most people need more than one slab because they have a lot of counter space or an island, we have neither which is why smaller houses are very nice on the budget.

These are most of the major projects I’ve done over the last months and have lost about 10-15lbs doing most of the work myself.  It’s been extremely enjoyable and frustrating but I wouldn’t have done it any other way.  I’ll leave you with a few final thoughts on this subject… Make sure you know your limitations, I’ve never installed wood floors & my drywall patching skills are bad!  So I hired our those two projects, asked around got some great recommendations and in so received GREAT deals.  Contractors get more jobs based on referrals, if you had a great experience tell your friends & family, most contractors will give you a break.  Finally take the time to enjoy your hard work! Regardless if you did they physical labor yourself or paid a contractor to do it, grab a drink sit back and admire YOUR hard work and effort.  You Deserve It!

France Day 8

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Today I was able to spend my time in Paris with @cupcakelady (the Wife), we didn’t really have a plan of what we were going to do or when to do it.  I think the lack of planning and allowing Paris to dictate our day was a good thing.  A word of caution that this sort of laissez faire planning could be a bad thing depending upon where you end up in the city.  I do not recommend this when going to visit the Church on the Hill (Sacre Coeur).

Sacre Coeur - The Church on the Hill

Sacre Coeur - The Church on the Hill

The big things we wanted to cover were getting some shots of the Eiffel Tower during the day, Rue Cler & the original department stores, namely Bon Marche.  Well 2 out of 3 aint’ bad :-D

The Eiffel Tower was first on our list and we were able to get some nice shots.  The wife and I were very militant in how we attacked this tourist attraction… get in, get out and move on! There were a lot of people which is to be expected… and once again the worst part about ANY landmark, tourist stop are the locals trying to sell you 4 trinkets for 1 Euros or the Scammers tieing braclets on your wrists and then charging you 5-10 Euros… Major pain in the ass, very annoying and comical when you see girls who have been caught in the scam trying to figure out why they owe money for a crappy yarn braclet.

After the Eiffel tower we strolled leisurely through Paris and made our way to Rue Cler.  Rue Cler is a market street full of restaurants and various types of vendors.  This is a MUST see location in Paris, find a Cafe’ (we decided on Cafe’ du Marche thanks to Rick Steves) get some coffee, lunch or whatever… We watched the performers do there thing and just enjoyed Paris at it’s best.  I think we spent a couple of hours in Rue Cler eating lunch and drinking coffee which just happens to be one of our favorite past-times!

The final trip of the day was to find Bon Marche… EPIC FAIL!  Well, maybe not Epic but Bon Marche is nowhere near the other department stores.  Needless to say we did not get to Bon Marche and traversed the sea of people and made our way to Galeries Lafayette which was a MAD HOUSE of people!  The best thing about the department stores was the buy one get one free 5 Euro bottle of wine we scored that was AWESOME!

I haven’t mentioned the train/sub-way system at all but it is SO easy to get around Paris-Metro area.  The Metro stops are not clean by any strectch of the imagination, however they are easy to navigate train listings are posted on monitors and the trains seemed to me mostly on time.

Thoughts:

  1. Drink the cheap french wine, look for the Vin du Pays on the label since most of these vinyards are cranking out quality wines.  Find a small grocery store of check out the deals at the big Departments stores.
  2. Read Rick Steves’ book on Paris, it has been updated for 2010 and find out what the latest scams are.  Be firm and don’t worry about offending these people, they are only after your money anyways.
  3. Don’t buy any appliances, especially Nespresso coffee machines.  They taste good, have many options to choose from and offer a plethora of coffees & teas but the power is an issue. You can use an adapter but after a while the difference in voltage will ruin your machine.
  4. If you have an iPhone spend the .99 cents and get the Official Paris Metro app, it will show you how to get ANYWHERE is Paris using the Metro & RER trains.

France Day 7

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Today my feet are officially mad at me! Started out a bit early today (caught the 8:15am train) with the Arc de Triomphe with the sun coming up the views were spectacular! I kind of remember Mr. Steves talking about roughly 400 steps to get to the top of the Arc, once again he’s full of it… The windy staircase is more like 1800 steps up and down. Anyway the sky was clear the view of the Eiffel tower was a bit hazy but you could still see everything. Traffic in the roundabout was as crazy as ever, didn’t see any accidents but it was amazing to watch the mass chaos and how effortlessly the Parisians navigated in and out of the circle.

Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe

A fairly quick stroll down Champs-Elysees to bypass the high end shopping (not very impressed), a quick stop at Chez McDon! where we only took pictures,  we ended up near the embassy district where I was yelled at by a tiny policeman for taking a picture of the US Embassy… The British were much more accomidating to my photo taking and I couldn’t locate the Canadian Embassy… they were probabbly directing the daily maintenance of the snow making machines (sorry, inside joke with my Quebec brethren.

View from the top of Arc de Triomphe

View from the top of Arc de Triomphe

After a quick cup of cafe and croisant we tackled the Louve. This is where your Museum Pass pays off, there is a seperate entrance and security check point for pass holders. This place is just as crazy as the roundabout Arc de Triomphe… Tons of people, lots & lots of stairs and a 30ft barrier to the Mona Lisa. The building itself is just as amazing as the art on the walls. You could easily spend an entire week at the Louve exploring exhibits and the grounds. The best part about the Louve for me was the Egyptian exhibit, they have a bunch of carcoghagus’ and an actual Mummy. The bandages were way more intricate than I was expecting and SO much better than the King Tut show I saw in Chicago.

The Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa

The Mummy

Out of all the Museums Museo D’Orsay is the one I enjoyed the best. Once again the building iteself is quite impressive and then there is the art.  I had a conversation with other Americans who had been to the Orsay before and they commented that they much prefer it over the Louve (the complete opposite of my European Co-Workers) and that most Americans seem to appreciate the impressionsists work a bit better than the classical renniasaince… I found this in my case to be very true.

Van Goh - Self Portrait

Van Goh - Self Portrait

I was having dinner with my wife this night and told her, to date there are 3 things I will never forget from this trip:

  1. Realizing you’re in Paris while strolling through the Latin Quarter taking in the ‘essence’ of Paris
  2. Van Goh’s Self Portrait
  3. This Apricot Tart Fine we were enjoying from one of the Versailles patisserie’s

As ALL of the pastries I enjoyed (Including the 4 I ate during the flight home) were delicious… stairing at Van Goh’s Portrait from only 6 inches away was literally a once in a lifetime exprience.  I Love this work!  The outlines he uses, the curved brush strokes, the BLUES… I Love the Blues!  I will stop confessing my love hence forth and finish describing my day. :-D

Old School Motorcycle in the Museum District

Old School Motorcycle in the Museum District

Once we finished covering every corner of the Orsay and taking in the Renior’s & Monet’s we deciced to grab more Cafe’ some food and Biere!  There was so much walking today that the best idea we had was to return to Versailles have dinner and get some rest.

Thoughts

  1. Do What Ever you have to do and go to Paris! There is honestly no place on earth like it.
  2. Map out your tour of the Louve BEFORE you get there.  There is way too much to see/do and not enough time to get most of your list done.
  3. Don’t listen to Mr. Steves… if possible make the 2 museums a one day trip.  Have lunch between visiting the Louve & Orsay and if possible go check out the Military Museum.
  4. Avoid eating Lunch in the Museum district or any ‘Touristy’ spots… it is very pricey.  Try to bring a picinic lunch or use the day to eat at the myriad of street vendors.

France Day 6

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009
Today was the first full day spent in Paris. The goal for today was to purchase a 2-Day Paris Museum Pass and follow Rick Steves’ Old Paris Tour in the Morning, then visit the Louve and the O’rsay if time permitted in the afternoon. Of course there would be stops for Cafe’ aui laite, biere, lunch and maybe some shopping.
Rick Steves Old Paris Walking Tour Stops:
Notre Dame
Tower
Crypt
Deportation Memorial
Ile St. Louis
Left Bank Booksellers
St. Severin
Place St. Michel
Sainte-Chapelle
Cité “Metropolitain” Métro Stop
Conciergie
Place Dauphine
Statue of Henry IV
*Note: I did not make it to all the stops… some were closed, some I did not find and others were not interesting…
In the Rick Steves’ Paris 2009 (MUST HAVE) you should start around 9am and alot about 4 hrs for the Paris walking tour, thus asumes your staying in Paris which I am not, needless to say my day started a but later after a train ride from Versailles to the St. Michel train stop which I beleive is a the heart of ‘touristy’ Paris.
Our first stop was Notre Dame, luckily it was a Thursday so the crowds were pretty light. This place was almost surreal, the stone architecture is something that must be experienced in person to truly appreciate what man has accomplished. The Church took about 200 years to complete and one you enter the door you can see why.  The one thing that stood out the most to me besides the sheer size of course was all the staindglass… It’s everywhere, it’s ornate and it has survived time, wars and mankind. I think you could spend all day in Notre Dame taking it all in but we have more to do

Notre Dame

Notre Dame

Next up was the tower at Notre Dame, you can purchase a museum pass here, but only do this if the lines are short, it’ll cost you 32euro and is worth every euro cent. This pass will get you into most every site on the tour and most museums have special entrances where you can bypass the crowds which is very handy at the Louve! The tower has a long spiral staircase which first takes you to a gift shop where you have to hang out for a few minutes to let the group in front of you climb down the stairs. The. Once the guide let’s you leave the gift shop you get to walk up an even narrower spiral staircase to the overlook. The views up here were really nice, you could see quite a bit of the city and also check out one of the bells. Thankfully this particular bell was not in use!

View from the Notre Dame Tower

View from the Notre Dame Tower

After Notre Dame and the tower we headed over to the crypt, even with the museum pass this was not a very exciting exhibit.  You get to see partial ruins of Paris.. Think lots of dirt…

We headed over to the Deportation Memorial, which was closed for lunch. Ile St. Louis was full of shops but nothing I was dying to see.  Next on the list was St. Severin so we briefly covered the West Bank Book Sellers, where you can find old issues of Playboy from the 60’s. St. Severin was amazing as well… The there was only an old couple praying in the church and the staind glass was just as ornate as Notre Dame.  These stops landed us in the Latin Quarter where we stumbled upon a demonstration of some sorts. I found out later that it was some sort of labor disagreement protest.

St. Severin

St. Severin

After lunch we went to see Sainte-Chapelle, a very nice but extremly small chapel. Th conciergie was another location that is interesting to see Marie Antonionette’s cell, but if you  are short on time or want to spend more time at another spot then you could quickly run through this one.

The best thing about  Cité “Metropolitain” Métro Stop was that it was next to the Pink Panthers office. I almost missed Place Dauphine except I looked up at a street sign to figure out where I was. Finally  Statue of Henry IV allowed for a decent view of the river and a part of the city.

By this time all the museums were closed so we headed for Dinner at a yummy Thai restaurant in Versailles. Then to bed so the dogs could rest for Friday.

Thoughts…

  1. Rick Steves is full of shit! The Historic Paris Walk takes about 6 hours not including lunch… Not 4 hours.
  2. The staind Glass is amazing. I was shocked at how much of it there is and the condition.
  3. There is no way to prepare for all the walking. Stairs and Walking, Stairs and Walking!
  4. If you have the time spend a day in the Latin Quarter drinking coffee, reading a book and people watching, there isn’t a better spot for it.
